Call for Proposals for the 2014 Instructional Innovation Conference

The Center for Instructional Innovation and The Exchange at Georgia State University are co-sponsoring an interdisciplinary conference focusing on instructional innovation, technological and professional development topics. All past, current and future faculty and GTAs at Georgia State University and within the University System of Georgia are encouraged to attend and to present a paper, poster, symposium or panel discussion.

The conference provides an opportunity to share pedagogical ideas, and to gain conference experience while enhancing your vita. In years past, participants have shared best teaching practices and attended sessions on topics ranging from syllabus development to instructional strategies and assessment in the college classroom.

The conference will be held Friday, April 18, 2014 from 9:30am to 4:00pm in the Student Center at Georgia State University with a catered lunch and a guest speaker. We will be running concurrent sessions throughout the day with a break for a lunch. If you are interested in attending and/or presenting, Click Here to Register and RSVP   (click on link). 

Proposals should be submitted in MS Word format via email to cii@gsu.eduwith GTA Pedagogy Conference in the subject line.

Deadline for submitting a proposal: March 15, 2014. All presentations that include student work must be approved by the student and the Institutional Review Board (IRB)  for IRB approval (CLICK HERE)

All proposals will be reviewed and presenters will be notified by April 10, 2014.

The deadline to register to attend is April 1, 2014. However, registration will close when we have 200 registrants.

Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):

 ·         Innovative Pedagogical Approaches

·         Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

·         Strategies for Assessing Student Learning

·         Implementing and Integrating Technology Effectively

·         Designing Effective Instruction

·         Creating Domain Specific Pedagogy (English, Chemistry, History, Education, Foreign Languages, ESL/TESL, etc.)

·         Service Learning/Teaching and Community-based Pedagogy

·         Teaching for Individual Differences

Papers.  Papers are 20-minute individual oral presentations. Individual papers will be combined into paper sessions of 2 or 3 papers. Papers can present empirical research if the research is too complicated to present in a poster. In addition, papers can present conceptual, theoretical, historical, philosophical, or methodological issues. The presenting author of one of the papers in the session will be assigned to serve as chair of the session by introducing all the papers in that session.

Posters.Posters are visual displays of empirical research. Poster presentations will be grouped and presented during one of four, one-hour sessions. The presenters will stay with their posters during the session while attendees view posters and ask questions of the presenters. The poster should include title and author(s), an introduction or background information, a brief method section, results, and discussion. You will need to bring your poster mounted on a tri-fold display board that will stand on a table. If there are not enough posters to constitute a poster session you will be asked to present your research in a paper session.

Panels. Panel discussions include 3 or 4 speakers responding to a question or issue with time included for interaction among the speakers and the audience. A panel discussion is organized by a chairperson who is the session’s moderator and is scheduled for 50 minutes with 3 panelists or 80 minutes with 4 panelists.

 Preparing the Proposals

            Please prepare your proposal in MS Word and submit it electronically to the Center for Instructional Innovation at Begin each proposal by indicating the type of presentation you are proposing—paper, poster, symposium, or panel—then provide the information requested below based on the type of presentation you are proposing.

 Proposals to present papers must include:

1.      Title

5.      Email

6.      A 150 to 200 word abstract (Indicate if your paper presents empirical research)

Proposals to present posters must include:

1.      Title

2.      Type of presentation

Proposals to present a panel discussion must include:

1.      Title of the panel

2.      Chair of the panel

3.      Department

4.      Email

5.      A 150-200 word abstract of the question, issue, or topic of the panel

6.      For each presentation:

a.       Presenter name, department, email address

b.      A 150 to 200 word abstract for each presentation
