CTW Workshops 2013/2014

Fall 2013 Workshops

Oct. 8 (1-2): Plagiarism or Language Re-Use?  Viviana Cortes.  In this presentation we will discuss the fine line that separates language re-use (the use of fixed expressions in academic writing and speech) and plagiarism.  We will work on examples of academic writing and particular cases that show that the difference between these two constructs is many times very difficult to establish. 423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Oct. 17: 12-1: Developing a Thesis Statement.  Brennan Collins:  Many of the major problems we see in student papers are directly linked to the lack of a thesis.  Helping students learn how to create a strong thesis statement is one of the most effective ways to improve their writing. 423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Oct. 21: 11-12: Preventing Plagiarism. Amanda Gable: The way you design assignments, teach citation of sources, and talk about plagiarism in the classroom can help reduce plagiarism.  We will discuss these issues with additional attention to non-native English students’ needs.  We also will discuss ways to respond when you do suspect plagiarism. 423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Oct. 31 (10-11): Creative Assignments Inluding Multi-Modal. Jennifer Lawrence. In this workshop, we will discuss how to create multi-modal assignments, where to find resources, and the pros and cons of using these types of assignments. 423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Nov. 6 (11-12): Critical Thinking. George Pullman. In this presentation, we will attempt to define critical thinking and explore various techniques that may help our students develop their thinking abilities. 423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Nov. 11 (10-11): Peer Review Strategies. Brennan Collins. Peer review can be an efficient tool for improving student writing, but only if students are given direction in how to offer their peers useful feedback.  423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Nov. 12 (2-3): How Academic Is your Language? Viviana Cortes. This presentation will explore online tools used to examine writing with several measures of frequent academic vocabulary and expressions.  Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own or student writing.  423 Aderhold Learning Center.

Nov. 7 (7-9): Hybrid Pedagogy Presentation. This presentation is part of a series of discussions with faculty from GSU, Emory, and Georgia Tech that explore teaching with technology.  Hodgepodge Coffee Shop.
